The Eton Mission Rowing Club is a small privately run club in Hackney Wick, East London.
We are located on the Hackney Cut, off the River Lea. We border the 2012 Olympic site.
Club open times for new members are Tues and Thurs evenings from 6:00pm and Sunday morning from 10:00am
The Eton Mission Rowing Club was established in 1885 by old Etonians and has been based in a few different sites around Hackney Wick, London. The rowers used to get boated from under Wick Bridge and stored the boats at the St. Mary of Eton church. The first boathouse was built on the Hackney Marsh side of the Hackney Cut and stood there for over 30 years. In 1934 the existing Gilbert Johnstone boathouse was built and opened on the Wick side of the Hackney Cut. The new boathouse was presented to the club by the President Gilbert Johnstone and has a inscription over the gates commemorating his brothers: Sir Alan, Lord Derwent & Cecil.
We cater for adult members who want to be 'serious racing' rowers or 'casual' part time rowers wanting a different exercise regime than a gym treadmill. We also run an indoor rowing club for those who prefer the 'dryland' version of the sport.
The club house is located on the Lea 'The Cut' canal in Hackney Wick between Carpenters Rd and Wick Rd Bridges. The 2012 Olympics site is located directly across from the boathouse and the main stadium is within a mile.
Nearest train service is Hackney Wick station, about 2 mins walk. Buses running services to Hackney Wick are 26, 30, 236,388 and stop approx 3 mins walk away.
Other transport more popular with members are cycling or walking.
